Democracy, Governance and Making Your Voice Heard
The session opened with a tour of how governments are structured across the world – dictatorships, monarchies, democracies – giving the group a clear framework for understanding the different ways power is organised and exercised. From there, the focus shifted to the UK's own democratic system: political parties, manifestos, and the institutions that hold everything together.
Then it got genuinely exciting. Each young person was tasked with creating their own political party – designing a flag, crafting three policies, and then standing up to deliver a speech to convince their peers to vote for them.
Watching that unfold was something. Young people who arrived quietly found their voice in front of a room. Arguments were made, challenged, refined. Votes were cast. The democratic process didn't just get explained – it got lived. The communication and critical thinking skills on display were remarkable, and the confidence built in that room will last well beyond the afternoon.
A huge thank you to Sasha for bringing that quality of education to this community. This was a fitting close to the summer series – and exactly the kind of session that reminds us why Pathways to Progress exists.
