Pathways to Progress

Law & Justice Session with Ana-Maria Pesea

Our young people tackled a powerful question at the heart of justice: what makes a law legitimate? Moving beyond surface-level rules, they explored where legal authority comes from, why laws deserve to be followed, and how trust in the system is built and maintained.

The session walked them through the structure of the UK justice system – from Magistrates' Courts handling everyday cases, to the Crown Court dealing with more serious offences, and the Supreme Court sitting at the top. A highlight was the discussion around juries, with young people examining what it means to place serious criminal decisions in the hands of ordinary members of the public – and engaging with the live national debate around whether jury trials should be limited.

They also gained a clear picture of the Crown Prosecution Service – its role in reviewing evidence, deciding whether cases should proceed to court, and ensuring justice is pursued fairly and in the public interest.

Sessions like this are exactly what Talks & Tools is about. By understanding the systems that shape their rights and responsibilities, our young people grow into informed, confident citizens.
