Pathways to Progress

The First Pathways to Progress: Ameer Rahman on Napoleon Bonaparte

Every programme has a beginning. This was Pathways to Progress finding its feet – and it did so with a room that nobody had quite anticipated filling so quickly.

Ameer Rahman delivered a lecture on Napoleon Bonaparte – his origins, his upbringing, and the forces that shaped one of the most consequential figures in modern European history. Over 40 young people attended, many accompanied by parents and supporters, with more than 60 people in total benefiting from the session. For a first event, the turnout was striking. The engagement was more striking still.

Watching that many young people gathered in a community hall, under the banner of education, asking thoughtful questions about history – it was exactly the image BYO had in mind when Pathways to Progress was conceived. The goal was always to bring the kind of intellectual exposure that private schools and wealthy families take for granted into a community that deserves it just as much.

After the lecture, the room didn't empty. People stayed – drinks, food, conversation. That matters too. Education and community aren't separate things at BYO. They happen in the same space, at the same time.

This was the first. There will be many more.
