Pathways to Progress

What Young People Told Us After Meeting Ali Osman

On Sunday 18 October, Ali Osman, Degree Apprentice at Jaguar Land Rover, joined our Pathways to Progress programme at Christ Church, Ward End.

Ali was honest with our young people about his own school days. He wasn't always the most focused student, and for a while his grades showed it. With the right friends around him and a change in mindset, he turned things around and built the path he is on today: earning a degree while working in engineering at one of the UK's best-known car makers. His message was simple. It's never too late to change direction.

At the end of the session, 23 young people filled in a short feedback form. Each figure below uses the number of young people who answered that question.

  • 19 of 22 (86%) chose at least one next step.

  • 14 of 19 (74%) rated the session 5 out of 5, "Really useful". The average rating was 4.3 out of 5.

  • 21 of 23 (91%) wrote down something they had learned. 11 of those 21 comments were about careers, apprenticeships, engineering or jobs.

The next steps young people said they plan to take (22 answered):

  • 11 will talk to family or a teacher about their plans

  • 8 will ask BYO or the speaker for more advice

  • 7 will look up a course, college or university

  • 7 will look into an apprenticeship or job

In their own words, young people wrote: "Never stop asking questions.", "Don't be lazy and work hard." and "follow your dreams". One young person's next step was to "Think of a business idea".

Most of the young people who answered were under 12 (15 of 22), so this session was an early first look at careers for many of them.

Thank you, Ali, for giving up your Sunday and being so open with our young people. If you have a journey that could inspire young people in Birmingham, we would love to welcome you to Pathways to Progress. Call us on 0121 448 7378 or 07346 216302, or email info@britanniayo.com.
